L-Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid. It is a building block of proteins that perform a numerous number of physiological functions. Arginine is an amino acid that the body cannot naturally make it. Therefore it is important to consume foods that provide it for the body.
Populations who particularly are in need of arginine are growing children, infants, athletes, the obese or overweight, and the elderly. In adult populations Arginine is considered to be a non-essential amino acid. For children, by contrast, Arginine is essential to development of the adolescent immune and defience system. Supplemented Arginine might be beneficiate for injured people as the demand for arginine is increased during injury and body cells repair. It is a known precursor of nitric oxide gas (NO2) and increases the diameter of blood vessels, and so allows increased blood flow to reach constricted areas.
L-Arginine presents benefits for hard training athletes. Supplementing with Arginine may boost the immune system, thereby allows athletes to train harder and to avoid the detrimental effects of minor health problems associated with overtraining. Athletes who are discontinuing the use of androgenic or anabolic steroids may benefit from supplemental arginine; Because steroids often lead to hypertension, and the accumulation of bad cholesterol (LDL). Arginine has been shown to help reverse such situations.
Due to the ability of arginine to increase growth hormone levels, its ability to encourage lipid oxidization, its ability to reduce blood pressure, and its ability to decrease arterial plaque, therefore supplemental arginine may prove beneficial for obese people.
